The bars that move with music: what they are called and how to make them

Those bars that jump up and down to the beat, the ones you see on music channels, beat videos and podcasts. If you never knew what they are called, this guide explains it and shows how to put them on your own video in a few minutes.

First: what is it called?

The effect goes by many names, and they all mean the same thing. Knowing them helps you find tutorials and tools:

How the bars know the rhythm of the song

Each bar stands for a range of sound, from deep bass on the left to treble on the right. The louder the sound in that range, the taller the bar. That is why the bass bars jump when the kick drum hits, and the middle bars move with the voice.

Because the drawing is calculated from the sound itself, it stays in sync with the music on its own, with nothing to mark by hand.

How to put them on your video, step by step

  1. 1

Open the Wavecabin audio visualizer on your phone or computer. Nothing to install, no account.

  2. 2

Choose the song. It is not sent to any server: everything happens on your device.

  3. 3

Pick a style: bars, line, circle, wave and 13 more. If you like, add a background photo, the cover art or a character.

  4. 4

Press play to watch the bars move with the music, then adjust color, size and position.

  5. 5

Choose the shape (wide for YouTube, tall for Reels and TikTok, square for the feed) and tap "Make the video". The MP4 comes out ready to post.

What about CapCut, Premiere or After Effects?

It can be done, but it takes work. In After Effects the usual route is the Audio Spectrum effect, with settings for bands, color and smoothing. In phone editors like CapCut, people often use ready-made sound wave clips, which do not follow their actual song, or mark the beats and sync elements by hand.

Another option is to make the bars here on a green background (chroma key) and bring them into your editor: the green disappears and only the bars stay over your video, already in sync with the music.

Making other things move to the beat

Besides the bars, the screen can shake, zoom, flash, split into RGB colors and glitch on every beat, and an aura can pulse with the bass around a character. All of it follows the sound by itself, with no keyframes.
