What people use it for
- Phone recordings
The iPhone recorder saves M4A files, and many older devices and programs only take MP3.
- Voice messages
Once you save the voice note as a file, it becomes an MP3 that opens anywhere.
- Car USB drives and speakers
Car stereos and small speakers usually play MP3 without trouble; FLAC and OGG not always.
- Sending and publishing
MP3 is lighter than WAV and FLAC, so it uploads faster to email, websites and social media.
- Editing in another program
WAV comes out lossless, ready to keep working in an audio editor.
Tips for a better result
- 01MP3 to listen, WAV to edit.
MP3 comes out at 192 kbps, a good balance between size and sound. WAV is bigger but loses nothing along the way.
- 02FLAC is a lighter WAV.
It loses nothing either, and the file is usually much smaller than WAV.
- 03M4A for iPhone and Apple.
It is the format used by iPhone, iTunes and Apple Music, about the size of an MP3.
- 04Converting does not improve the sound.
An MP3 turned into WAV gets bigger but sounds the same as the original.
- 05Start from the best file.
If you have the same song as FLAC and as MP3, convert from the FLAC.
- 06Need an even smaller file?
The "Make an audio file smaller" tool has lighter options than a regular MP3.
